How Online Gamblers Unmasked Cheaters - 60 Minutes/Washington Post Joint Investigation Questions Honesty, Security Of Gambling Sites

CBS news program 60 minutes will air the 30th of November about the cheating that has been going on at Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker...

The first story is about a player called Graycat that was killing the game for months even though his play was terrible and he won with 15 standard deviations above the mean, which was approximately equivalent to winning a one in a million jackpot six consecutive times.

The other story is about the player Potripper who made the 10-high call against Marco "CrazyMarco" Johnson in a $1,000 buy-in tournament in September of 2007. The Potripper was later traced to the headquarters of Absolute Poker in Costa Rica after a player requested his hand history and instead received more information than he should have, including other players cards and ip addresses.

The Washington Post's Steve Kroft and the team behind 60 minutes have been investigating these matters for over 4 months and will now send a program about it on Sunday the 30th at 7:00pm ET on CBS.

A collaboration by two of the world's most respected news organizations reveals how online poker players suspecting cheating were forced to successfully ferret out the cheaters themselves. That's because managers of the mostly-unregulated $18 billion Internet gambling industry failed to respond to their complaints.

The results of the four-month investigation by 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft, producer Ira Rosen and The Washington Post’s two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Gilbert Gaul will appear this Sunday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on 60 Minutes.

"He was raising, just really, really bad hands against very good hands. He seemed to play crazy," says Todd Witteles, a computer scientist turned poker player who believed he was losing too much to the same person. "It seemed like he was giving his money away. Except the only thing was, he wasn't losing. He was playing in a style that was sure to lose, but he was killing the game day after day," Witteles, who played a key detective role, remembers.

Michael Josem, a player and a computer security expert, plotted the odds of such consistent success. "We did the mathematical analysis to find that they were winning at about 15 standard deviations above the mean…approximately equivalent to winning a one-in-a-million jackpot six consecutive times."

The cheating, which netted the cheaters more than $20 million, occurred on two of the Internet's most popular sites, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet. The two sites operate out of a shopping mall in Costa Rica and run their games on computer servers housed on an Indian reservation outside of Montreal. They are licensed by a Mohawk tribe that has no background in casino gambling, a tribe that previously made the majority of its money selling tax-free tobacco. Though such gambling is illegal in both Canada and the U.S., the betting laws in those countries have no jurisdiction on the sovereign reservation.

Clonie Gowen Files Lawsuit Against Full Tilt Poker November 15, 2008

According to Nevada court records, Cycalona 'Clonie' Gowen has filed a lawsuit against Tiltware, LLC. Full Tilt Poker, and many of the famous faces you see on Full Tilt advertisements. Named in the suit personally are 'Team Full Tilt' members Howard Lederer, Andy Bloch, Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, Phil Gordon, Erick Lindgren, Erik Seidel, Jennifer Harman-Traniello, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen and Patrik Antonius.

PokerNews has obtained a copy of the claim, and can verify the following:

The twenty-page filing asserts Breach of Contract, Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Breach of the Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, Unjust Enrichment, and
Fraud. Gowen is seeking $40,000,000 in damages.

The filing details alleged meetings between Gowen and Tiltware executives where the deal for Gowen to endorse the website was struck. In the claim, Gowen alleges an oral contract existed while admitting no written contract had ever been signed, and that most of the alleged promises took place over the telephone or in meetings with Tiltware executives in Las Vegas in 2004.

The impetus for the lawsuit appears to be that earlier this week, per her claim, Gowen was told she would no longer be working with the website, and her name and image would be removed from the promotional materials.

PokerNews has reached representatives of Tiltware, LLC, who offered the following statement to PokerNews.com:

Tiltware LLC Comment re Clonie Gowen lawsuit.

"Tiltware, LLC, has been made aware of the recent filing of a meritless lawsuit by a former Full Tilt Poker endorser -- Ms. Cycalona Gowen. All claims have no merit and there are many inaccuracies improperly and unlawfully asserted by Ms. Gowen within her frivolous complaint. Tiltware LLC expects that this lawsuit will be dealt with accordingly by a competent court in due course."

Gowen has appeared in promotional materials for Full Tilt, dating back to the website's launch in May of 2004. Gowen rose to prominence by winning a World Poker Tour 'specialty' event, the "WPT Ladies Night" in Season One of the popular poker television show. She was raised in Oklahoma, and won a teen beauty contest in her tiny hometown of McAlester (population 18,000) at the age of 15.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday, November 14th, in Nevada District Court, in the court of Judge Robert C. Jones. PokerNews will have more on this story as it develops.

Still Playing at Action Poker - Good Session (even though my big hands got beat by bigger hands)

Ya, so I played 1.5 hours of Action Poker 10c-25c, 3 tables. I was playing a lot of hands but everyone else let me because they were playing very passive. I couldn't believe how many times I got kings and Aces tonight and it was nice to win with them:) So I'm up $41 plus I unlocked $25 bonus so up $66 today and at $263 right now.

Anyway, here are some hands

	I just won the last 4 hands. Nice to win #5:)
	This one made me laugh. He hit 3 outer on turn, than I hit my 2 outer on the river:) And he played the hand bad on every street. He put money in there everytime he was behind and the one time he is ahead he checks.

Now, here are 3 hands I got. 2 pair, a set and a flush and I lost them all:( Two of them I think I lost the minimum. Other one, I was getting 2.5-1 on a call on the river.

	Ya, so here is a flush I hit. It is a little funny how it played out. I think because it was 3-way pot I choose to play conservative since there was a possibility for higher flush or full house. Man, I thought I won this hand for sure. I think the other guy with ace high flush should have raised on the river for value.
	3 outer:( I felt so much strength from him when he check raised on the river. My instincts told me I'm beat but $10 in the pot, $4 to call so had to call.
	This hand is pretty sick and I think I got away pretty cheap. His call on the turn is bad, he should definitely have raised it since we're deep stacked(like $30 each) and there's lots of draws that I would pay to see.
