Double Check Raise - Glossary of Poker Terms

Double Check Raise - This play doesn't happen too often. Usually after the first check raise, the check raiser leads out and if not than the other player in position checks behind. Usually used on the flop and turn as opposed to turn and river. Used mostly it seems when there is a draw heavy flop(flush draw or straight draw) and the turn brings a blank.

In NBC Heads-Up Championship, Vanessa Rousso double check raised Daniel Negreanu in one hand. Vanessa flopped a set where Daniel flopped top pair. The board had possible flush and straight draws. Rousso checked raised small on the flop and than checked raised all in on the turn when the board paired.

There were two things going on in that hand. One, he was talking a bit, and I realized through the conversation that he did have a piece of the flop, even though he was trying to make it look like he didn’t. So, when the turn paired the board with a three, I’m hoping he either has trips or top pair with a six in his hand. So, I decided to check on the turn and let him believe that I checked-raised the flop just to see where I was in the hand. I planned on moving in after he bet, and did so very quickly. - Vanessa Rousso
